How to delete Messenger messages from both sides

What "remove for everyone" actually does to the other person's inbox

People mix these up constantly. Removing a Messenger message for everyone is not the same as deleting a chat from your own inbox. When you tap Delete chat on a thread, you wipe it from your view only. The other person still has every word you sent, intact, forever.

Remove for everyone is different. It uses Messenger's own mechanism and takes the message out of both inboxes at once. There is no 24-hour window, no edit-only-recent rule. You can remove a message you sent in 2017 just as easily as one you sent five seconds ago.

Here is the honest part about what the recipient sees. On Messenger, the bubble does not vanish into thin air. In its place they get a small greyed note, something like "You removed a message". But the words themselves are gone for them too. They cannot read what you wrote, they only see that something was there. No push notification, no email, no in-app banner announces it.

The catch is that you can only remove your own messages. You cannot delete a message someone else sent to you. That is by design. You own your outbox, they own theirs.

Step 1, Install Unsay for Messenger

Step 2, Open messenger.com or facebook.com/messages

The naive approach to bulk removal is to start from the most recent messages, because they are easiest to load. Do not do this. Recent messages are the ones the recipient still has open on their screen. When they turn into removed notes, the gap is immediately obvious. Remove the messages you can see and you'll feel done, while a whole legacy thread of your old messages is still sitting on the recipient's side, fully readable. That is not deleting from both sides, that is deleting from one.
