How to back up your Instagram messages, and actually be able to read them later.
There are two real ways to save an Instagram conversation in 2026. Meta hands you your entire account as raw files, up to 48 hours later. The short answer
How do you back up Instagram messages?
Two ways, and they do not do the same job. Meta's official export, at accountscenter.instagram.com, gives you a data dump of your whole account: every thread at once, delivered by email in up to 48 hours, as folders of raw JSON or bare HTML. It exists to satisfy a data portability obligation, and it does that. It cannot save one conversation, it cannot save it now, and it is not pleasant to read.
The other way is the Unsay Chrome extension. You open one DM thread on instagram.com, click Back up, and a few minutes later a single ZIP lands in your Downloads folder: a readable copy of that conversation, with every photo, video and voice note bundled inside as real files. Open it in 2031 with no internet connection, it still works. As far as we know, and we looked hard before building it, no other tool saves a single Instagram conversation this way. The alternatives are Meta's dump, or your thumb and a screenshot key.

Method 1 · The official route
Meta's export: your whole account, in a couple of days.
This is the route Meta documents and the one it is legally required to offer. It lives in the Accounts Center, not in the Instagram app settings where most people look for it. You request it, you wait, you receive a link by email.

Open the Accounts Center
Go to accountscenter.instagram.com in a browser, or in the app tap your profile, the three lines in the top right, then Accounts Center at the top of the settings.

Your information and permissions, then Export your information
Tap Your information and permissions, then Export your information, then Create export. Pick the Instagram account you want if several are linked in the same Accounts Center.

Select Messages only, and set the options properly
Choose Customize information and tick Messages alone, otherwise you will be waiting on your entire photo library. Then set the date range to All time, the format to HTML if you plan to read it yourself or JSON if you plan to process it, and the media quality to High. The default is the lower one.

Wait for the email
Meta prepares the file and emails you a download link. In practice this takes anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours, and Meta reserves the right to take up to 30 days for large requests. The link expires after a few days, so do not let it sit in your inbox.

Handle encrypted chats separately
End-to-end encrypted conversations are not in that archive. They have their own export flow, which produces a separate encrypted file protected by a PIN you have to set and remember. Lose the PIN, lose the archive.
Honest verdict
Use it if you want everything, once, for the record, and you are patient. What you get is a folder tree with one directory per conversation, message text in raw JSON or stripped-down HTML, and media in separate subfolders with meaningless filenames. Accents are famously mangled in the JSON export, so é arrives as é and you will be running a find-and-replace before you can read your own sentences. Videos and photos come back re-compressed rather than at their original quality, disappearing and vanish-mode messages are simply not there, and there is no way to ask for one conversation. It is an archive of an account. It is not a copy of a conversation.
Method 2 · The one everybody tries first
Screenshots and copy-paste: why it falls apart.
Scrolling up and hitting the screenshot key works for the last ten messages. Past that, it stops being a backup and becomes a chore with holes in it.
Three things break. The scroll wall: instagram.com uses a virtualised list that unloads old messages from the page the moment they leave the screen, so you are fighting the interface to keep your place. The media: a screenshot of a voice note is a picture of a waveform, and a screenshot of a video is a still frame. Neither plays. The searchability: two hundred PNG files in a folder are not a conversation, they are two hundred PNG files, and finding one sentence in them means opening them one by one.
There is also a family of shady "Instagram chat saver" sites that ask you to log in with your Instagram username and password. Never do that. Handing your credentials to a third-party website is how accounts get taken over, and no browser extension needs your password: Unsay works inside your own already-logged-in browser session and never sees it.

Install the extension

Open the conversation on instagram.com
Log in normally and open the DM thread you want to keep. Stay in a regular window: incognito is deliberately blocked, and the extension will tell you so rather than misbehave quietly.

Open the side panel and click Scan
Click the Unsay icon. A side panel opens on the right and stays open while you switch tabs. Click Scan: Unsay walks the whole thread back to its very first message, counting what is there and what kind of media it holds. A few thousand messages take well under a minute.

Open the ZIP in your Downloads folder
One file appears, named after the conversation and the date, for instance Unsay - alex_blackwood_2026-08-14.zip. Unzip it, double-click the HTML file inside, and the conversation opens in your browser. No internet needed, then or ever.
Honest verdict
This is the only way we know of to get one Instagram conversation, readable, with its media playable, on demand. The free tier saves your half of the thread, which is what most people are actually trying to keep. A Pass extends the archive to both sides of the conversation. What you get
What lands inside the archive.
One ZIP file. Inside it, one HTML file and one media folder. The HTML points at the media with relative paths, so you can move the whole folder anywhere, copy it to an external drive, or drop it in a cloud folder, and it keeps working.
The conversation itself renders the way you remember it: your bubbles on one side, theirs on the other, dates in between. Quoted replies show what they were replying to. Shared posts and reels appear as cards, links as links, story replies with their context. Photos open full-size in a lightbox when you click them. Videos play in a normal HTML5 player. Voice notes get a waveform and a play button, the same gesture as in the app, except the file is yours. Group chats keep every participant labelled correctly.
There is no tracker in that file, no external font, no call to any server. It was built inside your browser and it never left your machine. Full detail on the format is on the Local Backup feature page.
The order matters
Back up first. Then delete.
Most people arrive here on their way to something else: they want a conversation gone, and they want one copy of it first. That instinct is right, and the sequence is not negotiable.
Unsending is permanent. It removes the message from Instagram's servers, from your side and the recipient's side at once. It also removes it from any Meta export you request afterwards, which surprises people who assume the export is a safety net sitting behind the app. It is not. It is a copy of what is still there. Delete first and the record is gone for good.

One thing worth knowing
You can only unsend your own messages, on Instagram and in Unsay alike. Their messages stay in their inbox whatever you do. But a Pass backup keeps both sides in your archive, so the conversation you keep is the whole conversation, even after your half has been wiped from the app.

Stealth Mode and date ranges.
Two smaller features sit next to the backup in the same panel, and they matter once you start deleting.
Stealth Mode reverses the deletion order. By default Unsay deletes from the most recent message backwards, which is fine if nobody is looking. Stealth Mode starts from the oldest message instead, so the recent part of the thread, the screenful the other person would actually see if they opened the chat right now, stays untouched until the very end. If you are cleaning years of history with someone you still talk to daily, this is the setting you want. It comes with a Pass.
Date ranges let you keep the present and erase the past: last 30 days, last six months, last year, or two dates you pick yourself. Combined with a backup taken beforehand, you can wipe everything before 2024 from Instagram and still have all of it readable on your own disk.
And the pace: Unsay waits 5 to 7 seconds between each deletion, with a back-off that slows down on its own if Instagram starts pushing back. That number comes from measuring where the platform actually stops accepting deletions, not from guessing. It is why a long job takes hours rather than minutes, and it is deliberate.

Can you back up a single Instagram conversation?
Not with Instagram's own tools. Meta's export is account-wide: you request everything, you wait, you sort it out afterwards. There is no button anywhere in the app or on instagram.com that saves one chat. How do I download my Instagram messages from Meta?
Go to accountscenter.instagram.com, open Your information and permissions, then Export your information. Encrypted chats are exported separately, behind a PIN.
Is Meta's Instagram export actually readable?
Barely. You get folders of raw JSON or bare HTML, one per thread, with media in separate directories and filenames that mean nothing. Accented characters are famously mangled in the JSON export, so é arrives as é. It satisfies a data portability obligation. It is not something you can scroll on a Sunday or hand to anyone.

Is it safe? Do I have to give my Instagram password?
